Welcome

The Mourne mountains offer a variety of rock climbing unparalleled in Ireland, with 26 crags spread throughout the range. The high granite tors of Slieve Binnian, Slieve Bearnagh and Hen Mountain provide excellent routes on rounded weathered granite. The easy-angled slabs of Slieve Bearnagh and Slieve Lamagan offer long but generally easy outings. The steeper faces of Slieve Beg, Ben Crom, Spellack, Cove Mountain and Pigeon give quality routes mostly from 'Severe' upwards. The 'fun crags' of Hares Castle, Annalong Buttress and Wee Binnian give short test pieces of all grades, but with a less serious atmosphere and a south-facing aspect. Couple this variety with over five hundred quality routes and there is the opportunity for endless climbing trips. New routes are continually being put up and many fine lines remain.

The New Mournes guide has been completed and is now for sale in the usual outdoor retailers or direct from Mountaineering Ireland (MI). The main aim of this website is to continue to supplement the new edition and keep climbers up to date with information about new routes in the Mournes area. Thanks to your input the New Route Info section is available as a resource for both local and visiting climbers.
